Kinesiology expansion this summer

The University of Calgary will continue its move towards being a more widely recognized research institution with new construction on the Kinesiology Complex.

The expansion, slated to begin in August 2003, will see the construction of new laboratories focused on nutrition, genetics and human performance. The labs are scheduled to open in fall 2004.

The $14 million dollar expansion consists of one floor being added to the Sports Medicine Centre and two being added to the Human Performance Laboratory.

According to university officials, the clinical activities in Kinesiology will not be affected by the expansion, which seeks to further integrate research into those activities.

They also claim that the expansion and restructuring are not indications of downsizing, which has affected other units at the U of C.

Also, effective June 1, 2003, the HPL and SMC research structure will be integrated under the joint leadership of Drs. Walter Herzog and Benno Nigg.
