September was a very eventful month for Campus Security, who responded to numerous eventful calls. A particularly troublesome spot was the Den, where a number of attacks occurred. Around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, a Den staff member was attacked by an off-campus person with a beer bottle. This attack was unprovoked, and came as a surprise as the staff member is considered to have an easy personality. He received 16 stitches. The attacker was charged with assault with a weapon, and banned from campus. Three hours later, a second attack occurred.
“A male student was on the dance floor with his girlfriend and was attacked by three unknown males,” said Campus Security Manager Lanny Fritz. “He was assaulted on the head with beer bottles. It appears to have been unprovoked.
“The victim was required to go to the hospital to receive several stitches to close the wound in his head. The matter has been turned over to Calgary Police for investigation.”
Another assault occurred close to the Dining Centre.
“A male who was leaving the bar and was walking to the Dining Centre claims to have been jumped by two other males. He ran to the phone and called 911,” said Fritz.
He received injuries to his face, but refused to be taken to the hospital by EMS.
There was also an imprudent incident, which also took place in the Den and involved a non-student who was caught doing lines of cocaine in his booth. Den staff escorted him out and Calgary Police took over. Bike patrol officers also caught two males with marijuana in their car in an unrelated incident.
Meanwhile, an amusing though potentially dangerous incident occurred in the Arts Building.
A couch and lamp were found on top of an elevator car, used for joy-riding. These items were discovered during a routine inspection. Campus Security assisted maintenance staff in taking them down.
The ICT building saw a chemical spill, where about 20 litres of diesel fuel leaked from the emergency generator’s tank. Safety Services and Risk Management joined Campus Security in attendance.
The Information Commons continues to catch individuals searching for inappropriate materials on the Internet.
“These users have no guilt or shame when it comes to accessing pornographic websites,” said Fritz.
Complaints were received regarding a male subject who was using the Internet for improper purposes. The person was listed as “someone of interest,” by Calgary Police and is under investigation for past allegations of possessing child pornography.
In the meantime, Fritz continues to warn students, especially females, of the dangers of walking alone in the dark.
“We have 50-plus Safewalk volunteers to date. We had 190 escorts throughout the month of September.
“Many Safewalkers took the Safe and Sound program offered last week, and Safewalk coordinator Cameron May is attending the National Safewalk conference in BC later this month. Safewalk is a great program offered on campus, and helps students feel safe as they walk throughout campus at night,” said Fritz.
Campus Security also attended an incident on Tuesday evening where a female was assaulted outside the residences. The matter has been turned over to Calgary Police.
