The University of Calgary hosted Guillermo Martinez Mora, Secretary of Education for the State of Jalisco in Mexico, on Mon., Aug. 18. The secretary from Alberta’s sister state in Mexico discussed collaborative educational opportunities between the U of C and Mexican universities.
"U of C researchers and programs focusing on Latin America have acquired international recognition over the past three decades," said U of C Vice-President Research Dr. Dennis Salahub. "We look forward to many years of fruitful and warm cooperation with Mexico and with Jalisco in particular."
Currently, 10 undergraduate and 22 graduate students from Mexico attend the U of C. In addition to its programs on Latin America, U of C academics also partner with Mexican counterparts in areas such as archaeology and geology.
"For many years, Jalisco has been the center of university study in Mexico, comprised of seven prestigious universities working in collaboration," said Mora through a translator. "This year, the international exchange program was not as successful as we hoped it would be, but I am convinced that… the end result of collaboration will bear fruit for the product."
Mora’s major goal is to enhance the productivity of the Mexican higher education institutions by training students locally and abroad with the hope that they pass on the knowledge to those in Jalisco.
