Just like the Jeffersons, the Dinos men’s basketball team is “movin’ on up.” After defeating the Simon Fraser University Clan Fri., Jan. 28 and the Trinity Western University Spartans Sat., Jan. 29, the men are sittin’ pretty (pronounced: pre-TAY) on top of Canada West’s mountain division.
Things started off a leetle shaky for the Dinos according to Assistant Head Coach Wayne Thomas.
“We didn’t play particularly well on Friday.”
The Dinos led narrowly at the half 38-36 and managed to evade a desperate comeback attempt by SFU in the last three and a half minutes of the game. SFU went on a 10-0 shooting binge to close the 77-66 gap to 77-76 with 40 seconds remaining. Chris Wright played the angel of death, with a short jump shot to seal the deal 79-76.
Surinder “I Surrender!” Grewal was on fire with 21 points and six rebounds. Jon Salgado had a huge game with 18 points and seven rebounds. Josh “feisty” Feist put up 13 points and had seven lovely assists. To top it off, Sandy Brar returned from home on Friday to beef up the bench and contribute 12 points to the win.
Saturday night’s a’right for fightin.’ However, the Dinos didn’t have to, they had it in the bag. Thomas credits the change to “more flow to the game on both ends.”
The Dinos were up 44-34 at the half and didn’t slow down. They turned on the back-burners in the last 11 minutes of play and put out a 20-7 run. The final score was 84-67.
Without guards flocking around him like flies, Chris “long socks” Wright brought in 24 points and eight rebounds.
“Sandy played great. He did everything,” said Thomas of Brar, who racked up an almighty double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The third member of the double-digit club was Grewal with 21 points and seven rebounds.
The Dinos are heading to sketchy Saskatchewan Feb. 4-5. If the Dinos win, they secure first place in the mountain division. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are tied for second place with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
