It’s March madness in the Calgary music scene! With reading week in the past and finals fast approaching, you might not be able to abandon the books to take in some shows. However, there should be a few enticing concerts this month to coax you out of your study-hole.
The month kicks off with a post-punk post-party on campus with Fallout Frequency and Debra coming to That Empty Space this Friday. Next week, also on campus, those mighty metalcorers Underoath and bluesman James Hunter are playing at MacEwan Hall on March 9 and March 12, respectively. Calgarian alt-folker Joal Kamps is next week’s That Empty Space treat, as he stops by with Thank Magnets on March 13. If you need some slightly rockier tunes, Victoria’s Acres of Lions are hitting up the Palomino on March 21.
Tired of waiting for the Trews to come to town? No longer! They are ready to go at Wyckham House on the Mount Royal campus on March 14. It’s trew, thank goodness. March 17 gives music fans a choice between metal and Celtic punk as the Black Label Society have a Black Label Bash at the Stampede Corral and the Real McKenzies come by the Whiskey.
There’s more yet at That Empty Space as they host Ontarian folk-rockers Auditor General with support from Wives Tale on March 20. Mac Hall has more for us as well as American singer/songwriter Will Oldham (a.k.a Bonnie “Prince” Billy) comes by March 24.
March 27 brings the Summerlad and Sea Level Rise to That Empty Space before a choice of shows later that evening. Electro-punkers Mindless Self Indulgence come by Mac Hall and Beija Flor and friends light up Broken City. The month ends with an indietastic good time as Wintersleep drop by Mac Hall on March 30.
