CFL has eyes on Steenbergen
University of Calgary Dinos offensive lineman Dylan Steenbergen’s confidence got a little boost when he was named the number eight ranked CFL draft-eligible player last week.
The rankings are produced by the CFL’s amateur scouting bureau, which is made up of a team of scouts, player personnel directors and general mangers from the eight teams in the league.
Steenbergen is eligible to be invited to the league’s 2009 evaluation camp and Canadian draft.
The six-foot-five, 285 lbs. Lethbridge product was part of the Dinos 2007 offensive line, which helped clear the path for Anthony Woodson and Matt Walter to break the single-season rushing record.
The faculty of humanities student also represented Canada as a starting member of the U-19 national team at the Global Football Challenge in Miami in 2007.
Squash tournament
The Calgary Racquet Centre is playing host to the second annual Charity Squash Tournament sanctioned by Squash Alberta. The event will be held Oct. 3–5 and the proceeds will go to Special Olympics Calgary. Their goal is to register 100 players and raise $10, 000 for the charity. Because the tournament is sanctioned, the outcome of the matches will contribute to the Alberta Squash rankings.
Women’s hockey
The University of Calgary women’s hockey team is currently dominating in pre-season play. They beat the Southern Alberta Isntitute of Technology and Mount Royal College 6–0, and 3–2 respectively. You can catch them trying to repeat wins when they host SAIT and Mount Royal at the Olympic Oval Sept. 29 and Oct. 6, both games go at 5:30 p.m. The regular season gets underway Oct. 16 when they play host to Red Deer.
Women’s volleyball
The University of Calgary women’s volleyball team will get a chance to refine their skills as they participate in a non-conference tournament in Regina Sept. 26–28. The four-day contest will give the Dinos a first look at Winnipeg and Brandon, and will be the debut of head coach Jesse Knight.
On Sept. 16–18 the Dinos host the Husky Dino Cup with scheduled games against Trinity Western at the Jack Simpson gym.
Six new athletes will join the newest encarnation of the Dinos volleyball team. Laura Littlejohn tops the list as she comes from the CCAA national champion Malaspina Mariners in Nanaimo, B.C.
At six-foot-two, the explosive middle has made the B.C. colleges all-star team twice and was rookie of the year in her freshmen season. Last year the Mariners were undefeated.
With Willemina Stikker-Breemhaar and Deanna Delisle leaving the squad after graduating, Littlejohn will help fill an offensive hole.
Kelly Frittenburg and Ali Sandholm will also join the team in a middle position. Both are out-of-province recruits.
Frittenburg played for a U-18 team at the age of 16 and made the youth national team.
Also added to the team this year is left side Lindsay Russell from Surrey, B.C. who has an injury and will be forced to miss the upcoming season.
