Online Exclusive: Inside Fine Arts Awareness Week

MacEwan Student Center was transformed into a stage for budding artists last week as the Students’ Union opened up the university to the world of fine arts, during Fine Arts Awareness Week.

From Nov. 6-10 the MSC north courtyard and other places around campus became a bridge between artists and the university community as students presented their talents in the hopes of raising more awareness of all art forms.

“I think art is better when we have more people collaborating on it,” said first-year fine arts graduate student Tim Hamilton. Hamilton said he believes that art opens up an understanding to the world around us.

“It’s important for people to have as much exposure on things,” said Hamilton.

Samer A-Saber is the director of the U of C drama production The True Life Fiction of Mata Hari, which opens Nov. 28. A-Saber said he was pleased to be able to present a sneak peak during the week and hopes it will draw the student body ‘to get involved’ in what the drama department is working on.

Eric Jablonski, Student Unions’ VP Events welcomes the arts community. He noted that while the student body is getting exposure to music presentations, there is still a variety of arts out there worth exploring.

“[Fine Arts Awarness Week] is more of an appreciation rather than just awareness of the arts,” said Jablonski. “[The event] sticks it into the student faces and makes them notice that there is a lot of talent on campus.”
