Online Exclusive: Men’s Soccer lose pair over weekend

By Aneesha Birk

The Dinos men’s soccer team had it tough this past weekend with a 2-1 loss against the University of Victoria Vikes Sat., Oct. 28 and a 3-0 loss against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Sun., Oct. 29.

Saturday Carlos Cruz scored the Dinos only goal in the first half. Cruz headed a deflection off a Vikes’ defenceman following a Dinos throw-in. Minutes later the Vikes answered back with a successful header putting the score at a 1-1 draw entering the second half.

Early in the second half the Dinos had several opportunities to score but the Vikes’ goalkeeper put up some impressive saves. A Vikes player scored the third header of the game which set the final score at 2-1.

On Sunday, Dinos head coach Gibbs rested several of the Dinos’ regulars and split time between the goalkeepers as well. The game had no effect on the standings as Saturday’s games had assured the Thunderbirds second place and the Dinos had secured third with a record of 7-5-2.

“UBC is arguably the most talented,” said Gibbs. “We’ve had a strong run this season and we must come back strong.”

The Dinos closed off their season and must now prepare for Canada West and Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships. The Dinos have bounced back from difficult losses before and look ready to come back strong against UBC in the Canada West playoffs Sat., Nov. 4 in Edmonton.
