Students looking to bolster their resume with skills suited to commercial or community minded pursuits might be interested in the University of Calgary Leadership Program, run by Student and Academic Services.
The Leadership Program runs over four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum, with each program involving learning more about leadership skills and making a contribution to the U of C community. Students begin with bronze and complete each level at their own pace. The program is in its second year and has proved popular with students so far.
“I chose to sign up for the program to learn some new skills and experiences that I can use in my future,” said fourth year Electrical Engineering Student Wesley Lo. “I particularly valued the contributions different staff members shared with us which helped us understand Leadership.”
The program began as a pilot project put together by Coordinator of Student Life Programs Alyson Woloshyn, from a group of 100 student leaders. Its purpose was to provide a more formal opportunity for training, in areas such as understanding leadership, community participation and values. Its first year culminated with a keynote speech from United Nations Envoy to Africa on HIV/AIDS Stephen Lewis.
“It was largely developed to help better use the resources of Student and Academic Services,” said Woloshyn. “I think it has evolved this year to also provide opportunities for students to get involved in leadership on their own terms.”
Over 100 students are currently enrolled in the bronze program, with 42 in the silver. The launch of the gold program is scheduled for 2006.
