Winnipeg was the site of the latest Canada West track meet, the Cargill Indoor Games, sponsored by you guessed it… Cargill foods. As expected, the Dinos women performed well in the middle and long distance events.
The ladies dominated the 600m event, claiming the top three spots. Veronique St. Pierre, Jackie Jones and Renee Kaylor came first, second and third respectively, all within 24 hundredths of a second of each other. The ladies finished with times of 1:33.27, 1:33.49, and 1:33.50 respectively.
In the 1000m race, Heather Sim placed fourth overall, with a blazing 2:56.83 time. Shannon Slater placed second in the 1500m event with a time of 4:28.88, just over a second behind the first-place time. Lindsay Winter claimed second place in the 3000m event, finishing in 10:17.61.
The individual successes of the Dino women translated into victories in the 4X400m relay, as well as the 4X800m relay race. The women’s 4X200m relay team finished in third place.
The women’s success was not just restricted to middle and long distance events. Diana Gruber took first place in the 60m hurdles final with a scorching time of 9.01s. Overall, the women hope that their collective performance in the Cargill meet will help them contend for a national championship this season.
On the men’s side, there were some strong individual performances. Geoff Kerr placed fourth in the 3000m run event with a time of 8:33.14. Travis Saunders also placed ninth in the 600m, finishing fast in 1:25.70.
