The University of Calgary hosted the 2004 Canadian Junior National Wrestling Championships Mar. 19-21 and the home mat definitely proved to be an advantage as two Dinos wrestlers excelled in their specific weight classes.
Huy Nguyen was crowned champion in the 55 kg division. After settling for bronze in each of the past two years he came back with a vengeance this year, winning the final bout handily 14-3. In varsity competition, Nguyen was atop his weight class this year at the Canada West championships and third at the 2004 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Wrestling Championships.
On the women’s side, Laura McDougall also reigned supreme in the 55 kg caste. She twisted and tossed her opponent en route to a stupendous 9-0 victory, earning Outstanding Female Wrestler honours along the way. McDougall also won gold at the Canada West Championships and notched a silver at the CIS finals earlier this season.
Both outstanding wrestlers are now eligible to compete in the Junior Pan Am Games in Mexico July 22-25.
Good luck kicking some ass for Canada!
