Wrestlers bring the bling

By Sean Nyilassy

The oily bodies that collided Feb. 20-21 did not include Ron Jeremy in Bend it into Beckham or Done in 60 Seconds, but rather the University of Calgary wrestling team. They travelled to Edmonton to compete in the Canada West championships.

On the men’s side, the Dinos placed fourth of the six teams thrown in the ring. Simon Fraser University was the king of the mountain with 53 points, while the Dinos earned a respectable 31.

“It was hard,” commented team member Josh Smith, “because we already gave up three weight classes.”

Huy Nguyen battled his way to victory, placing first in the wee 54 kg category. Also finishing atop his piece of pie for the Dinos was Joe Bentley, weighing in at a solid 61 kilos.

“Bentley and Huy wrestled like studs,” marveled Smith.

In the 82 kg classification, Tony Baldwin found a piece of silver hanging from his neck when the dust cleared. Damon Booth and Beamer Comfort both placed third in their respective weight divisions of 68 kg and 90 kg.

On the women’s side, the Dinos concluded the weekend a mere three points behind the winning clan, again from SFU.

Andrea Ross dominated the 57 kg women. Her opponents are pending skin grafts to fill the holes the mat burns left after the malicious beatings they received. Also kicking major ass for the Dinos was Laura McDougall. She reigned supreme amongst the 65 kg bunch.

Placing second were Brandy Ens amid the 48 kg lightweights and Breanne Graham at 70 kg.

Many Dinos wrestlers who excelled this season will get the opportunity to brawl with Canada’s best at Brock University Mar. 5-6 at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Wrestling Championships.

Good luck, and whatever you do, take comfort in the fact that any one of you could beat the crap out of me any day.
