Track time

By Russ Dyck

The University of Calgary track and field team competed at the Alberta High Performance meet Feb. 21-22 and arrived back in Calgary with some impressive bling. Jessica Zelinka was exceptional, winning the 60m with the fastest time in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport rankings, while Shannon Slater and Samantha Anderson won the 1500m and pentathlon, respectively, both achieving the standard CIS time.

For the men, Nathan Kendrick had a grand weekend, placing first in both the 1500m and the 3000m, while Adam Betzelt placed third in the pentathlon.

The track and field team will hold their second place position going into the Canada West championships Feb. 28-29 in the winter wasteland known as Winnipeg.

General ramblings

With reading week over, soon the big university sports will be too. Basketball, hockey and volleyball are all in playoffs and, win or lose, all will be done by the end of March.

It’s sad watching all the teams grow up so fast over the season then, all of a sudden, they’re finished. They’ll be back, they always come back, but we have to wait the rest of the season, plus the long, lonely summer months and then a couple more in the fall semester.

But they will be back…
