The University of Calgary’s law school recently received top honours from Canadian legal magazine Canadian Lawyer.
Canadian Lawyer annually reviews different Canadian law schools. In this year’s review, Calgary boasted a B+ mark and was recommended by 100 per cent of alumni interviewed for the article.
"We’re glad to see that past students have benefited from their education here," said Faculty of Law Dean Dr. Patricia Hughes.
One of the major reasons cited for the school’s high ranking was the relatively small size of the faculty compared to other law schools.
Second-year law student Tyler Ivie believes the school’s small size, which allows him to meet and know all of his professors by name, was the biggest factor in the U of C’s ranking.
"I have absolutely no worry regarding the quality of the education," Ivie said about his next few years in the program.
Ivie pointed out the school’s relatively small size is also a curse, as it limits the diversity in the law program’s curriculum.
The faculty is planning to maintain the current student-teacher ratio while increasing the size of the school over the next few years.
"By increasing the enrollment and by increasing the staff, we hope to maintain the good things in our program while addressing the issue of the small size," said Dr. Hughes.
