It’s one week later and still no volunteers. My attempt at seducing potential writers to the “sports side” was admittedly weak, but hey, can’t blame a boy for trying. So for lack of anything better to do, here is a quick and dirty update from my inbox.
The Olympic Oval is searching for its next Olympic idol by hosting a Talent Identification Camp on Aug. 8 and 9, enticing people with the question: "So you want to be the next Olympic idol?"
Offered up as proof that talent can indeed be scouted in speed skaters, Mark Nielson–the world’s fastest man over 100 metres–was apparently scouted while skating in blue jeans at an Oval summer camp. Perhaps the National Speed Skating Team is in dire need of new talent, or the $20 "commitment" fee is helping fund the new renovations at the Oval. Either way, we won’t know how successful the camp is for at least a couple of years.
Oh, the Oval is undergoing renovations.
In more Oval news, there will be the sixth annual Summer Classic from Aug. 8 to 10. This is the only summer speed skating competition in North America so there will be talent aplenty and records may be broken.
To cap it all off I’m sad to announce the dismantling of the Calgary Dawgs in their semi-final playoff series at the hands of the Swift Current Indians. We had high hopes for this Western Major Baseball League team–perhaps next year. Read former Gauntlet Sports Editor Kevin Rothbauer’s article in the Calgary Herald for more information.
Well there you go folks, please don’t make me beg.
