B
“B,” you think, nodding to yourself in a disinterested fashion. The most non-confrontational letter grade in the system, B evokes none other than the shrug, nod, and quiet passing of a solid performance. One B may not be the epitome of one’s student career, but a year-long average of the same letter is a noteworthy accomplishment.
For the University of Calgary swim team, B set a steady pace throughout the year. B was present at the beginning of their season, and B was still present when the team finished off their season. Granted, B is an underestimation of the team’s Canada West Championship win in Calgary this January– an A is due there, but a B balances out the more disappointing second-place finish at the CIS Championship in March.
Perhaps some will feel cheated by a B and I’ll be the first to admit that certain team members deserve more. The swim team houses a pool of talent if you will–that have stepped up to the block on more than one occasion this year.
But alas, B stands its ground, for B is the team average that represents team performance. If you feel that you deserved more, well, tough shit. Hint for next year: beat out the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship and it might just earn you an A.
