Last weekend the Dinos men’s basketball team had their first home weekend sweep in two years.
The second-place Saskatchewan Huskies began the weekend full of hope, but lost by only one point on Friday night. John Riad (right) scored in the final 22 seconds of the tied game to take the lead for the U of C, and Aman Heran followed with two free throws to finish the Huskies off. The close match resulted in a 80-79 Dinos victory.
The next night, the Dinos tightened their defense and destroyed the U of S 76-65, bumping the Dinos into a first-place tie with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
“We played better for three out of the four halves,” said Head Coach Dan VanHooren. “And on Saturday night, we only allowed 65 points as opposed to 79 on Friday.”
Riad led the U of C in scoring on Friday with 24 points, followed by Heran who netted 15. On Saturday, Riad and Whit Hornsberger both scored 17 and Heran sunk another 15.
“For now the boys are just focusing on doing well in school and staying in shape,” said VanHooren.
The Dinos are off until January when they play the Huskies again.
