Hopes are high heading into this weekend’s cross country nationals in London, Ontario.
“The men have a strong team and a good shot at a medal,” said the co-coach of the University of Calgary’s cross country team, Doug Lamont. “On any given day, they are probably a team that could win it.”
Currently the men are ranked fourth behind the U of A, Windsor and Guelph. The women are in the eighth spot. Not spectacular, but not bad considering four of their seven team members are rookies.
“On a good day, they could break the top five,” claims Lamont. “The hope would be to maintain their eight place at least.”
Geoff Kerr and Melanie Thompson were just named Canada West Rookies of the Year for their performances this fall. Kerr is also the U of C Male Rookie of the Month.
“It’s been really awesome,” said Kerr about his first season on the university circuit. “A lot of things are coming together and I’m running faster.”
Kerr has set some pretty high goals for this weekend, but with the way he’s running, why not?
“First, I’d like the team to do well,” said Kerr. “Then I’d like to try being CIS Rookie of the Year and maybe even an All Canadian.”
