30 Hour famine a success

The Chaplains’ Centre kicked off its annual 30 Hour Famine in early March. The fundraiser, put on by World Vision, raised money for famine-related projects.

This year’s projects included Ethiopian drought prevention, a Tanzanian water project, Cam-bodian landmine awareness and Canadian youth programs.

The Chaplains’ Centre has hosted this event for the past six years.

"The 30 Hour Famine helps raise awareness for the people who do it and those who sponsor it," said Pentecostal Chaplain Kelly Johnson. "It is a catalyst that encourages students to make a difference and seek out new ways to do this."

This year, 60 students raised almost $10,000. The four top fundraisers were Evelyn Proudlock, Lana Bentley, Jeff Chan and Sarah Burch.

The event wrapped up March 1 with a dinner provided by the Students’ Union, in MacEwan Hall.

"Students said it was a good experience," said Johnson. "They ask what else they can do, so for the past three years, I took students to Mexico during reading week. We built homes, worked in medical and dental clinics, and orphanages. It’s a very transforming experience."
