A 40 day-long cold shower

Imagine this: a good looking man, single and running at the peak of his sexual capacity decides to make a vow: no sex for 40 days. Sound crazy? It is.

In 40 Days and 40 Nights, handsome Matt Sullivan, played by Josh Hartnett, suffers after his last relationship ended in emotional disaster. He compensates by rejecting commitment and sleeping with a lot of women.

Then comes Lent, the time of the year when religious people like Matt’s brother give up something precious. That’s when Matt decides to go where no man has voluntarily gone before-no sex. No kissing, no touching, no self-gratification-nothing for 40 days and 40 nights. He is determined: he throws porn videos and magazines out, rejects any invitations to parties and avoids talking to women.

During the first weeks, Matt holds up very well-until the woman of his dreams, Erica, played by Shannon Sossamon, walks into his life. Even as Matt grows close to her, he is willing to finish his vow, while his colleagues at work place bets-and they bet a lot-that he won’t finish.

Matt’s steeplechase goes on with his ex-girlfriend reappearing, Erica wanting to have sex, his parents talking about their sex life, visions of naked women and physical decay until the night of the nights finally arrives.

40 Days and 40 Nights parodies the ancient cliché that men need sex at least twice a day and that they think of having sex every ten minutes. Josh Hartnett is perfect in the role of Matt while Shannon Sossamon is equally as fitting. She adds a little romance to the movie and makes it even more enjoyable for women.

All in all, 40 Days and 40 Nights is a comedy with a romantic twist and definitely worth watching if you’re up for easy entertainment-even if you’ve taken a vow of celibacy.
