You can’t win ’em all. Good effort. Better luck next time. Just a few words of encouragement for the lady Dinos after their disappointing weekend sweep at the hands of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
The Dinos held solid leads in both games at the Jack but were unable to hold off the T-Birds’ hot shooting from beyond the arc. Friday’s game saw Calgary rally behind Natalie Hudec’s stellar play and open up a nine point lead with only six minutes left in the game. Scoring didn’t come easy for the Dinos after that, as UBC came storming back to take the lead for good and steal a 65-61 victory. Hudec led the Dinos with 15 points and Anna Bekkering chipped in 11 in the losing cause. Judging by how the season has been going, one would’ve expected the Dinos to pull off a sweep and move back to .500–and well, they had their chance.
On Saturday the Dinos trailed late in the game by two points when they scored two quick buckets, capped off by a theft and a lay-up from Hudec. On top by two, the Dinos defence failed to pick up T-Birds sharpshooter Charmene Adams. She drilled a three with only 10 seconds remaining. Trailing by one measly point the Dinos failed to get a bucket and suffered their second heartbreaker of the weekend, 79-78. Jen Goldade led the Dinos in scoring with 17 points.
That puts an end to play in 2001 as the Dinos break for the holidays with a 3-5 record in conference play. Hopefully they can get back on the winning track in the new year.
