How it all came down: a year in review

The University of Calgary was among the most successful schools in the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union this year. Collecting one gold medal, three silvers and a bronze, the Dinos put together the third-highest total, behind only the University of Alberta (four gold, two silver, three bronze) and the University of Victoria (2-2-2). As well, 22 Dino athletes and two coaches picked up individual CIAU or Canada West Universities Athletic Association honours.

What follows is a run-down of the 19 CIAU championships, and how the Dinos faired in each sport.

Field hockey

First: University of British Columbia, second: University of Victoria, third: University of Alberta

Dinos: fourth in CWUAA (2-9-1)

Women’s rugby

First: U of A, second: University of Guelph, third: University of Waterloo

Dinos: This is the lone CIAU sport in which the U of C doesn’t participate.

Men’s soccer

First: University of Western Ontario, second: U of A, third: UVic

Dinos: sixth in CWUAA (2-8), missed playoffs; Mike Pavicic named CWUAA all-star

Women’s soccer

First: Dalhousie University, second: U of A, third: Guelph

Dinos: fourth in CWUAA (3-5-2), missed playoffs; Kelly Matheson named CWUAA all-star

Men’s cross-country

First: Guelph, second: University of Toronto, third: Université de Sherbrooke

Dinos: fifth in CIAU; Andrew Alley, Nathan Kendrick and Steve MacIntyre named CIAU All-Canadians, Alley named CIAU rookie-of-the-year

Women’s cross-country

First: UVic, second: Western, third: Guelph

Dinos: didn’t qualify as a team for CIAU finals; Kristen Brennand finished 38th

Football

Vanier Cup: Université Laval, Atlantic champion: St. Mary’s University, CWUAA champions: University of Saskatchewan, Ontario champions: Waterloo

Dinos: fourth in CWUAA (3-5), lost CWUAA semi-final to UBC; Jeff Lewis named CWUAA all-star and CIAU All-Canadian, Brian Shewchuk named CWUAA all-star
