Homestead in the suburbs saved
The City of Calgary Heritage Advisory Board awarded a 1999 Citizens’ Heritage Award to the Alberta Historical Preservation and Rebuilding Society for its work in saving the McPherson farmhouse.
The 1910 McPherson farmhouse, located on Sierra Morena Drive S.W., survived due to the efforts of Mabel Smart, daughter of builder Joseph McPherson and The Alberta Historic Preservation and Rebuilding Society.
Awards of Distinction honour volunteers
The June 2 Awards of Distinction hosted by the Developmental Disabilities Resource Center of Calgary recognized individuals and organizations for their contribution to the volunteer spirit in Calgary. Three people and seven organizations were honoured for helping strengthen communities by donating their time and resources to assist others in achieving their goals.
In the employer category, The Flower Market was selected as a winner. The Mustard Seed Street Ministry and the University of Calgary Students’ Union were co-winners in the community spirit category. Sheelagh Cook was a winner in the volunteer category.
Heart failure patients needed for study
A study at the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto that involves the implementation of new therapy for people who have experienced heart failure is currently under way.
Participants in the study will receive free treatments. However they must be heart failure patients without any other diseases, and cannot be on the waiting list for a heart transplant.
